I attended the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science many years ago. I studied to be a funeral director and embalmer. While going to school I moved into the third floor of a funeral home near the school. I would go to hospitals and nursing homes with other students and pick people up. Once back the embalmer would teach us how to embalm. We would also help with viewings and funerals when not in school. It was an interesting experience but I always kept a sketch book and kept drawing. I’d later be a licensed embalmer and work for several years before leaving to work on my career as an artist. These death houses are my reminder to remember those times and where I started. I made a select amount for my show in Alexandria opening on May 29th.
